Coils and Chiffon

This past weekend, “T”: The New York Times Style Magazine featured a spread called “Nightie Aphrodite” for which Esperanza Spalding worked it as the cover girl. The spread also featured Solange Knowles, Les Nubian, Corrine Bailey Rae and Juno Temple–all natural-haired sisters–donning dramatic evening gowns.

One blog writer, however, confused me about this whole thing, when she wrote “If you’ve ever wondered the proper way to rock a ‘natural’ with an evening gown …” Do people wonder that? Were sisters with naturals waiting for permission to wear their ‘froed or loced hair with sequins and such. No one ever told me I should have been. Was I supposed to wear a wig when I got really dressed up before now? Are kinks and sumptuous silks and no-no? Silly me for writing my own rules. And silly you, blog writer, for writing them for me, too.
