(Shades of) Brown Skin

Elle magazine, October 2010

Gabourey Sidibe is one of the featured starlets on the covers of four different October 2010 Elle magazine. And on the cover, she’s mysteriously gone from dark skinned to brown skin.

Responding to the outcry from people about the photoshop advertisement, Robbie Myers, the magazine’s editor-in-chief had this to say:

“We have four separate covers this month, and Gabby’s cover was not retouched any more or less than the others.”

“It sort of boils down to this: at a photo shoot, in a studio, that is a fashion shoot, that’s glamorous, the lighting is different. The photography is different than a red carpet shot from a paparazzi.”

If you’re aware of the publication industry, you know this is one of the most pitiful responses Myers could have come up with in the form of an explanation for Sidibe’s Ambi-ized complexion. If you’re ignorant about the field, which isn’t surprising, you’re smart enough to figure while the flashing lights of red carpet cameras may be different than that of a photo shoot, that has very little to nil to do with this woman’s skin that’s naturally more like Alek Wek’s than Jessica White.

Does it suck that Elle did what they did? Yep. I’m not surprised by the airbrushing spectacle, though, and can’t help but wonder why the editor and art director didn’t see fit to do something to that obnoxious hairpiece Sidibe is wearing.

I found comments on another blog more interesting and entertaining than the debacle itself. By the way, most of the people making comments have no idea of what they’re talking about.

Gabbie’ body will not fit on the cover of this mag…it’s common sense. We want to put a big bodied black woman on a cover of a ‘general market’ magazine, and want her to be treated the same as anyone else…but then complain that she’s been re-touched! LMBO

Save the tears…Gabby’s getting her shine on(pun intended).

(Will you help me please? What’s the pun?)

THIS IS SIRIUS WHITE SUPREMACY AND DEGRADATION OF BLACK BEAUTY. THE LARGER ISSUE IS THE DEEP DESIRE BLACK WOMAN HAVE TO IMITATE THE IMAGE OF THE PALE GENETICALLY DEGENERATE RECESSIVE BIOLOGY OF TRANSPARENT PEOPLE WHO BY NATURE ARE NOT THE BEAUTIFUL ONES. YET EVEN WHEN INFORMED BLACK WOMEN REJECT THIER OWN IMAGE. THIS WAS DONE TO RE-ENFORCE THOSE EMOTIONS.HEALTH IS BEAUTY.

lmao i doubt any one of yall even subscribe to Elle magazine anyways.. look at her bright side she got payed for it.
