Winston Bennett: Sex Addiction 101

So many people confuse a sex addict with someone who really likes having sex. There’s a huge difference. Winston Bennett articulates the difference, discussing his own issues. Listening to someone discuss sexual addiction, just like any other addiction–drugs, alcohol, shoplifting, otherwise–is sobering.

While there are many interesting and poignant things said throughout the duration of this ESPN interview (e.g., at his most active, Bennett slept with, on average 90 women per day; he slept with someone the very day after he married his friend; his wife of 20 years is still with him, the list goes on and on), one of the most striking is that the former basketball player says if his wife had an extramarital affair he’d leave her, despite her graciousness and the fact that she’s “the most forgiving woman I know.” He goes on to say something like that’s just the way men are.

I’ve had many conversations with men who say they’d leave their wives if she had a relationship beyond their marriage, even if they were unfaithful to their wives. Their justifications are usually the same, “Men can’t handle things like that.” I can never ignore the assumption that women can handle having their hearts dismissed and betrayed.

I can’t help but be reminded of a few things: When we’re extended grace and mercy, we must not take it for granted and assume they will always be there; we must be kind and compassionate to each other forgiving one another as God has forgiven us; and universal plan dictates that what we give is what we get.
