Trying to Comprehend

Can someone define for me what pro-life means exactly? It confuses me, and I’ve tried to figure this out for years and am reminded of this recently with the tragic killing of Dr. George Tiller, a doctor who performed abortions.

Reporting from Los Angeles and Wichita, Kan. — For years, abortion foes tried to put Dr. George Tiller out of business. One of the few American physicians who performed late-term abortions, he was targeted by violent extremists as well as principled opponents.

In 1986, his clinic was bombed. In 1991, it was blockaded for six weeks. In 1993, he was shot in both arms. In March, Kansas prosecutors tried him on charges of breaking an abortion law; he was acquitted. In May, vandals cut wires to security cameras and made holes in the roof of Tiller’s clinic, Women’s Health Care Services, a fortified single-story building where abortion foes keep daily vigil.

Until Sunday, when a gunman shot Tiller to death in the foyer of his church, the doctor had always overcome the daunting legal and physical challenges of his work, terminating pregnancies of women and girls who were in the 22nd week of gestation or beyond. But where supporters of legal abortion saw a savior, opponents saw a heartless killer.

Pro-life means you’re in favor of life, right?

I clearly recall seeing protestors in front of the only clinic in The Magnolia State where abortions are performed. They stood and marched in circles armed with huge placards of bloody, mangled babies making declarations like “Choose Life, Not Death,” as they chanted passionately about hellbound doctors and women who dared darken the clinic’s door. How is it then that passionate protestors (not those in Jackson specifically) can justify killing a doctor who performs abortions or the woman who makes a choice to have one? Isn’t that acutely hypocritical? Poetic justice? Is that what this is called?

These “baby killer” killers … are they just pro-babies’ lives and by the time a baby crowns, he or she has to fend for self?

Further, what about the people who are anti-abortion but pro-death penalty? I. just. don’t. get. it. If you’re pro-life, shoudln’t you be for all life? Then I wander something further: Propositional logic necessitates that a pro-lifer’s opposition is anti-life. Pro-death perhaps? Is that what individuals who believe women should have a choice about whether or not they can have an abortion or not are?

I really don’t get it.

  1. Well my Favorite line from the anti-abortion people is “Abortion=Black Genocide”. Really? It makes no sense. Especially since the statistics on abortions say otherwise.
